Introducing The Border Tarts.
The Border Tarts came into being in 2007 following the cessation of the Borders Harmony West Gallery Singers as a result of key members moving away. Pat and Mary felt that there should be a new group, and Pat’s inspired name reflects the well-known local delicacy.
We are a group of ladies who like to sing an eclectic range of songs, many of which are not heard much nowadays, and to entertain with readings to make a varied programme.
We sing a capella, ie without accompaniment, just us, a music stand for the words, and a recorder to give us the first note. This makes us adaptable in almost any location. We have sung in churches, halls, sitting rooms, marquees, harbour walls, and on the backs of lorries. Our audiences range from just a few to a crowd.

“Folk singing in local clubs since the 1970s. Original member of the West Gallery choir in Berwick, "Borders Harmony Quire" led by MaryTart. When the Quire eventually folded, mainly through a lack of men, Mary and I decided to re-form as a women-only group. I thought up the name Border Tarts because 4 of us were from the Borders Harmony Quire and added the "Tarts" since we were all women...., plus the pun on the delicious border tart!”

“Retired teacher. Along with sport, music has been a big part of my life since childhood. I love harmony and although I have done a lot of choral singing and musical theatre, this is my first time singing as part of an acapella group.”

I joined the Tarts last September when I heard they were a "man" down! After 20 odd years of bringing up children and helping run The Green Shop, I thought it was time I had a hobby! Thanks for having me, Tarts. SUCH FUN!

“I am from Nottingham originally & came to East Lothian as my husband was promoted to The Registers of Scotland from Nottingham Land Registry where we met.
When my two daughters were old enough to be left after school I did various part time jobs the last one as a home carer for Social Services. We moved to the Borders in 1995 when Jim got early retirement.
It has taken a long time to spread my wings & make friends but joining The Border Tarts is the jewel in the crown !!!”
